My thought for the day
I love the magazine American Baby, but, like with many magazines, I’m often shocked by the prices on the clothes they feature. One picture in the August 2008 issue showed an adorable girl I would guess is around 14 months old. She’s wearing a top and skirt and cute socks. The cost of her outfit? $217! The top alone was $124.
Considering kids at that age grow so fast, how many wears are you realistically going to get out of that outfit? I wouldn’t spend $124 for a top for myself and I could probably wear it for the rest of my life. I guess what mostly bothers me is that the money spent on that outfit could go to, in my opinion, much better things like a college fund or a charity.
Am I crazy? I have been accused of being stuck in 1980s prices
- especially by my children! - but I don’t think I’m that out of it. I do have a theory though that people often think things should cost as much as they did during their junior year of high school, which was 1980 for me, so maybe I am really out of touch.
What do you think? If you had(have) the money, would(do) you spend so much on a kids’ outfit? Do you think it’s worth it? The clothes are very cute, no doubt. Your thoughts?

I do love a great Janie and Jack outfit–so cute! But I can get them at Once Upon a Child the next season and they’re still just as cute!
I try to dress myself in classics that will be in style for at least 5 years. And $30 is the tops I’ll spend on one piece of clothing for regular wear for myself.
I want to pass that onto my children. So I buy secondhand and love hand-me-downs. THen I don’t feel so bad when the 18 month old decides a mud swim is the thing to do and I can’t get it out in the wash. Or grandma gives her an m&m that won’t wash out….
That doesn’t mean I resist completely the new clothes–they are darling! But I reserve them for the times when looking one’s best is important and no stains (including nasty formula stains for the underweight babies I get) are expected.
