Organizational Tips for Moms (Part 4) - Kid Clutter

It’s amazing how much “stuff” comes with having kids. I’m not a big shopper and still struggle to keep on top of it with my girls.

Luckily we’re back with professional organizer Denise Williams with solutions for managing your child’s clutter. If your child is past the baby stage, these tips are easily updated to older children.

MB: Denise, what advice do you have for new parents about organizing the clutter that a baby brings?

DW: Set up “clutter catchers” in the nursery and label them. Some examples might be:

•Memorabilia (like special cards and keepsakes)
•Photos (label photo boxes by year)
•Toy and Stuffed Animal containers
•Bookshelf and baskets for board books that are read often
•Bin in closet for outgrown clothes (they pile up fast)

Encourage “flow” by purging at least once a year (maybe before a birthday).

MB: How do you decide what to purge?

DW: Get rid of anything that doesn’t hold meaning anymore, or that your child no longer plays with.

Use manila envelopes clearly labeled with the date for keepsake cards (only keep the ones with a special personal message) and other paper memorabilia.

Use the “1 in-1 out” rule for toys, stuffed animals, and overflowing closets if you are a shopper.

Part 5 in this series: Finding peace with the chaos children bring, even if you’re a perfectionist. Watch for it soon!
