Take a breath
Often when my daughters were babies, I functioned on adrenaline. When they would cry, I would quickly jump up and frantically try to figure out what was wrong. All of those adrenaline surges wore me out by 10 in the morning!
When I took my infant massage instructor training, my teacher shared with us advice that she offers new moms. She tells them, “Whenever the baby cries, take a breath. That way you can clear your head to better analyze the situation and evaluate what it is your baby needs.” So simple, yet so powerful. Your baby will be fine in the time it takes you to take a deep breath and, with practice, you will lower the stress that comes with having a new baby in the house.
One of the chapters in my book is about Sarah, who says, “It’s a myth that motherhood is instinctual,” so don’t be hard on yourself if you struggle to understand you baby’s cries in the beginning. Breathe and give yourself the time you need to get to know your newborn.
