Welcome!

Thank you for visiting Spit-up On My Shoulder, my blog for new moms. My name is Melanie Bowden and I am a postpartum doula, writer, teacher, and (most importantly) mom to Danielle and Linda. Although I do a variety of things, I’m definitely not a Super Mom. Paper plates? You bet. Housecleaning help when we can afford it? Oh yeah. I need all the help I can get. :)

My mission is to make the time after birth a better experience by honestly talking about the postpartum months, along with providing news and information to ease the transition.

I’m often frustrated by the way the media portrays new parenthood. That’s why I’m happy to present the first Spit-up On My Shoulder (SOMS) Media Award to the January 11th episode of the TV series Scrubs. One of the characters, Carla, was suffering from postpartum depression and they dealt with it in such an honest way, including talking about her symptoms and the importance of seeking treatment. I already loved the show, but now I love it even more. Go Scrubs!

Can you guess why I picked the banner at the top? Purple is my favorite color, but that pointy part on the left sold me on this one. It sort of looks like a nipple and, whether you’re breastfeeding or bottlefeeding, you’re dealing with nipples a lot.

Until next time,
Melanie
